Hello, I am a qualified acupuncturist in Shiplake between Henley-on-Thames and Reading treating adults and children. I started using complementary medicine 30 years ago and have found it incredibly helpful in managing migraines, my menstrual cycle and my menopause. I have also used it to treat my three children and have a particular interest in treating women’s emotional well-being and in treating children, teenagers and young adults.

Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to improve people’s well-being. It is based on the principle that illness occurs when the body is out of balance and the energy in the body (called ‘qi’) is not flowing freely. Acupuncture seeks to allow the energy to flow freely again and put the body back in balance.

Acupuncture has a sound evidence base. The British Acupuncture Council website has lots of information about acupuncture and details the growing body of evidence-based research on acupuncture’s effectiveness (https://www.acupuncture.org.uk). There is evidence to support its effectiveness in treating headaches, arthritis, back pain, insomnia and menopausal symptoms.

People who come to me for acupuncture come with a variety of emotional and physical issues including issues with their menstrual cycle and fertility issues, anxiety and mental health issues, arthritis and muscular skeletal problems, digestive issues, asthma and for general well-being.

Some people who come for treatment have a fear of needles but are normally reassured on seeing the single use disposable needles. They are very fine and people and children are normally reassured to know acupuncture treatment does not feel like an injection, most people do not feel the needle being inserted, but just feel an internal feeling, often a tingling or pulling sensation. I also use non-needle techniques including acupressure, a laser pen, tuina, shonishin and guasha for those patients who do not want a treatment with needles. More information on these treatments is in the section headed treatment.

Acupuncture is suitable for all ages including teenagers, children and babies. Children normally respond quickly and need less treatment than adults. Some only need massage, moxa or acupressure.

Acupuncture can work alongside Western Medicine, but you should tell your GP if you are having acupuncture treatment.
