Treatment

I specialise in Five Element Acupuncture, which treats the whole person, so your treatment will be tailored to you depending on why you have come for treatment. Some people come for treatment with a specific reason and some come for their general well-being.

The first treatment will last about an hour when we will discuss your current symptoms and your medical history, any medication you are on and your general life style. Subsequent treatments will be a bit shorter and for children are 30 minutes.

The number of appointments you will need and how frequently will depend according to why you are coming for treatment, but we will discuss this at your first appointment to fit in with your needs and lifestyle.

As well as Five Element Acupuncture (which I explain in more detail below), I also use Traditional Chinese Medicine, electro acupuncture and the following non needle techniques (as well as a laser pen for those who have a fear of needles):

-ACUPRESSURE. This involves massaging the acupuncture point instead of using a needle and is particularly useful when treating children.

-TUINA. Tuina is a particular massage to move the qi in the body and encourage balance.

-SHONISHIN. Shonishin is a non-invasive therapy involving tapping, stroking and pressing the skin to calm and move energy. It is of particular benefit to children or people with anxiety and is very non-threatening and calming.

– CUPPING. Cupping is the use of suction cups on acupuncture points or areas of the body to move areas that are stuck and can feel like a deep massage when the cups are moved.

– MOXA. Moxa is the burning of a herb and is used to warm areas of the body. It increases flow in the body and helps reduce pain and boosts immunity. It is often used on children especially those who are wary of needles and for those with fertility issues.

– GUASHA. Guasha is the use of a tool (traditionally a jade stone) which is rubbed on areas of the body to clear cold and stuck energy in the body and thus improve flow. Again it can feel like a massage.

I may recommend lifestyle changes to assist your well-being. Chinese Medicine teaches that diet, sleep, exercise, our emotions and our general lifestyle strongly affect our health and our ability to feel in balance.

I operate a 24 hour cancellation policy, so appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged for.

Five Element Acupuncture is a holistic treatment based on the premise that we are all one of the five elements – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water or Wood. We all have all the elements in us but we have one at the root that causes our physical and mental situations in life and treating that by using certain acupuncture points can help put everything in balance. Each element correlates to different parts of the body and different emotions and over the course of the first treatments on talking to you I will work out which one you are and how best to treat you.

Maybe you are Fire? Does your world revolve around others? Is it very important to you to be loved by everyone sometimes at a cost to yourself and to your health? Do you find it easy to relate closely to others? Are you optimistic? Do you bring joy to situations and people? Do you wake at night and are you aware of your heart beating? Do your levels of joy fluctuate quite dramatically? You may be Fire which is connected to the Heart, Small Intestine, Pericardium and Triple Burner. Treating the Fire Element can make you feel more settled and self suffficent.

Or maybe you are Earth? Do you need lots of support or the understanding of other people? Do you crave sympathy? Or hate it? Do you spend a lot of time looking after others? Sometimes too much? Do you love cooking? Do you have digestive issues? Can you be a bit needy or obsessive? Maybe you are Earth. Earth is connected with the Stomach and Spleen and treatment of the Earth Element can help you feel more able to support yourself and be less demanding of others.

Or maybe you are Metal? Do you hold yourself back from others? Do you find it hard to let go of things and move on? Is a spiritual life important to you? Is it important to you that you receive the respect of others? Do you feel something is missing in your life? You may be Metal? Metal is connected with the Lungs and Large Intestines and treatment of the Metal Element can help you feel more whole and connected.

Or maybe you are Water? Are you fearful in lots of situations and is important to you to protect yourself? Do you feel the world is a dangerous place? Do you have phobias? Or are you never fearful and into extreme sports? Do you have sore knees or a sore lower back? You may be Water? It is connected with the Kidneys and Bladder and can treatment of this Element can help you feel more grounded and secure in yourself and in the world.

Finally, maybe you are Wood? Are you easily frustrated? Do you have issues with anger – feel angry quickly or never feel angry? Are you good at organising and getting things done? Or terrible at it? Do you have boundary issues with other people? Do you struggle with structure or love it? Maybe you are Wood? Wood is connected with the Gall Bladder and Liver. Treatment of the Wood Element can make you feel more balanced in your emotions and more in flow in your life.
